Caldic expands pharmaceutical activities by investing in third cleanroom

At their site in Hemiksem, Belgium, Caldic Benelux already has two fully equipped cleanrooms to serve the pharmaceutical industry. Recently they invested in a third state-of-the-art cleanroom, allowing them to expand their capabilities in Pharma. On top of that, they are also expanding their dedicated pharma warehousing and repackaging facilities.

We speak with Dries Segers, Business Development Manager Pharma Europe, and ask him about the reason for constructing this new cleanroom. “We already have a strong footprint in the pharmaceutical market in Europe. With our new investments we continue our goal of serving our customers even better,” he answers. “Caldic has always been focusing on what we call ‘full-service distribution’. Our aim is to offer customers more than just standard products in standard packaging. We want to go the extra mile and help our customers with product sourcing, special packaging, sampling and dedicated cleanroom fillings.”

The White Room

Cleanroom 1, also called ‘The White Room’, has been operative for more than 10 years. It has a focus on filling FDA-approved drums or IBC’s of with Propylene glycol EP/USP and Glycerine EP/USP grade through fully dedicated and heat-traced lines.

Reducing complexity for long-term customers

Cleanroom 2 is a sample booth that Caldic has developed together with one of their main pharmaceutical customers. The goal was to reduce complexity and save costs by performing the sampling of the supplied products at Caldic’s own facilities. Therefore, Caldic has made an investment in a sample booth where they can now sample a variety of products in different packaging under laminar flow and even with Nitrogen or Argon blanketing. After sampling, the products remain at the Caldic warehouse, functioning as an external warehouse, until the final customer approves the sample. Then, Caldic delivers just in time to their production site, resulting in a less complex and leaner process for the final customer.

New cleanroom under construction

To serve their pharma customers even better, Caldic has made an investment to expand capabilities with a third cleanroom, which is currently under construction and is expected to be operative in Q4 2019.

This cleanroom is suitable for the filling of flammable and non-flammable pharmaceutical solvents into drums, IBC’s and even stainless steel IBC’s. In this ATEX Cleanroom, Caldic will be able to drum products as Ethanol EP, Aceton EP, Isopropanol GMP, and many other pharmaceutical grade solvents.

Cleanroom 1 is limited to filling Propylene glycol and Glycerin pharmaceutical grades”, says Dries. “We noticed that there is a demand in the market for dedicated cleanroom fillings of a variety of other pharmaceutical grade solvents: flammable and non-flammable, in different packaging types. With our new cleanroom we will be able to fulfill our customers’ needs to have their pharmaceutical products filled in a dedicated way to avoid any risk of contamination.”

Expanding warehousing and repackaging capabilities

Additionally, Caldic is expanding its capabilities for dedicated pharma warehousing and repackaging possibilities. Currently the repacking of secondary packaging under controlled conditions is already a service Caldic provides to their customers along with dedicated storage of pharma products. Caldic is looking further into growing these capabilities, together with its customers.
